5 Healthy Spring Snack Ideas

Spring is a season that inspires us to eat better and move more, and one of the most effective ways to get started is by eating healthier snacks.

In fact, 25% of our calories now come from snacks. As of 2010, Americans were consuming more calories than they were in 1970 partially due to our increase in snacking.

That doesn’t mean we have to give up snacking, just be smarter about it. Here at Rootastes, our favorite snacks are fruity, savory, and reflective of the flavors of spring.

Apple Donuts

No baking required. Apple donuts are crunchy, sweet, and savory- everything you’d want in a snack. Slice the apple from the top to the bottom about ¾ inches thick, make a hole with a corer, and spread cream cheese over the top. (Bonus points if you add food coloring to the cream cheese.)

Make them Instagram-worthy by adding sprinkles or a pretty arrangement of fruit and nuts on the top. Vegan or not a fan of cream cheese? Give almond butter a try.

Edamame

It’s no surprise that we’re huge edamame fans. We’ve featured edamame on our menu and have written about it before. It’s crunchy and salty and can be seasoned in a variety of ways. Our favorites include crispy parmesan garlic edamame and spicy lemon edamame hummus. Grab this snack and go!

Frozen Blueberry Yogurt Bites

The healthier alternative to chocolate covered nuts, frozen blueberry yogurt bites use fresh fruit and allow you to control the sweetness. Mix a sweetener like Stevia into Greek yogurt and fold in the blueberries to coat. Pull out with a fork, tap off the excess yogurt, and freeze on a lined or nonstick baking sheet for an hour.

Psst! You can test this recipe on basically any fruit.

Lemon Coconut Protein Balls

The scent and taste of lemon always give us hope for spring. These lemon coconut protein balls have the dose of lemon we’re craving along with a tropical hint of coconut. If that doesn’t do it for you we also recommend banana oat energy bites.

Fruit Leather

Chewy, sweet, and delicious, fruit leather is relatively easy to make and there’s no limits to flavor combinations. Our favorites include Strawberry Rhubarb, Mango, and Blackberry Mint Lime.

Healthy snacking doesn’t have to be bland. Our favorite spring snacks are tasty and delightfully crunch, chewy, and savory.
